Our schools will accept babies as young as six weeks old,
and kindergartners are the oldest. Most children start at two years, and all children are introduced to an educational environment
as soon as each child can comprehend his/her surroundings. Classes are individually based, and each class consists of a mixed
age group, the point of the Montessori system being "each child according to his or her ability." The buildings are divided
into rooms, and the largest room into areas, and it is delightful to see the groups of children sitting in orderly circles
around each teacher, obviously fascinated with what the teacher is saying, reading or demonstrating.
And they go on
field trips, too: to the zoo, the aquarium, and museums, of course. At Thanksgiving, the children traveled to a pizza restaurant
in Corrales, where they made pizza with their parents, who met them there. And the best trip was to the airport where they
were able to examine a FedEx plane and even go inside it! There is a spacious play yard behind the school, and in the summer,
everyone goes on picnics to the Village Park on Rio Grande.
Hours for this splendid education are made as flexible
as possible since the school functions in partnership with parents, aiming to fit with the parents’ schedule.
Basically, school hours are from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Children may attend school from 9 to 12, from 9 to 3, and before- and after-care
run from 7 to 9, and 3 to 6. Most children attend at least three days a week and many are at school five days a week. Three
or more days’ attendance is recommended, since consistency is better for the child.
